Nut Butters

Post image for Nut Butters

Nut butters can be made from any nut of your choice. Basic nut butters for the Paleo diet include:

  • Almond butter
  • Cashew butter
  • Hazelnut butter
  • Macadamia nut butter
  • Pecan butter
  • Pistachio butter
  • Sesame seed butter
  • Sunflower seed butter
  • Walnut butter

Nut butters are versatile in the Paleo pantry – besides the common use as a spread, nut butter can be used as a quick pick-me-up to stave off hunger (a tablespoon usually keeps me hunger-free and energized for two hours). Homemade nut butter can also be used to replace the almond nut butter in our Paleo almond nut butter cookie recipe to make your own Paleo nut cookie variation.

I prefer homemade nut butters to store-bought because I know (and control) what’s going into my nut butter. Making nut butter is easy, fun and you can get as creative as your budget allows when making your own nut butter. For instance, try making an almond cashew butter. If you don’t like the taste of almonds, you can always make a pistachio pecan butter. Although I prefer my nut butters without added flavors (since I like to keep them flavor-neutral for baking), you can add coconut oil or raw honey to taste.

Make nut butters crunchy, smooth, flavored…the variations are endless and the only limitation is your creativity!
